peter rollins makes me happy

"For too long the Church has been seen as an oasis in the desert - offering water to those who are thirsty.  In contrast, the emerging community appears more as a desert in the oasis of life, offering silence, space and desolation amidst the sickly nourishment of Western capitalism.  It is in this desert, as we wander together as nomads, that God is to be found.  For it is here that we are nourished by our hunger."

Tumbling on the Appalachian Trail

So, I started up a blog last month over on tumblr for my upcoming hike on the Appalachian Trail (AT).  I'll be posting to it along the way and have already put up a few random things.  It's some gear talk, some of what's motivating me, and eventually will be my stories and lessons learned from the trail...along with whatever else finds it's way into the mix.  More info on the trip to come...but for now: 2175

Believe me, every man has his secret sorrows, which the world knows not; and oftimes we call a man cold, when he is only sad

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

(via beenthinkingsomethingofadreamer)

"In all of creation, identity is a challenge only for humans. A tulip knows exactly what it is. It is never tempted by false ways of being. Nor does it face complicated decisions in the process of becoming. So it is with dogs, rocks, trees, stars, amoebas, electrons, and all other things. All give glory to God by being exactly what they are. For in being what God means them to be, they are obeying him. Humans, however, encounter a more challenging existence. We think. We consider options. We decide. We act. We doubt. Simple being is tremendously difficult to achieve and fully authentic being is extremely rare. Body and soul contain thousands of possibilities out of which we can build many identities."
